The Zigana Pass is a mountain pass in the Pontic Mountains in northeastern Turkey, close to the border of the province of Trabzon. The pass is situated 2,032 metres (6,667 feet) above sea level on road D.885 E97, 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Gümüşhane and 120 kilometres (75 miles) from Trabzon on the Black Sea coast. Five months out of the year are spent with snow on the pass.
The Zigana Tunnel, which runs beneath the pass, is 1,702 m (5,584 ft) long, 11 m (36 ft) broad, and has a maximum height of 8 m. It is 1,795 m (5,889 ft) above sea level (26 ft). This tunnel is one of the country’s longest.
The village’s namesake, Zigana, is 3.5 kilometres (2.2 miles) southwest of the tunnel and is a well-known ski resort. A 3 kilometre (2 km) trail provides access to the adjacent Lake Limni, and a partially paved 19 km (12 mi) road connects Kalkanl settlement to the lake.
The Zigana Mountain Pass on the borders of the Torul district of Gümüşhane, one of the most important routes connecting the Eastern Black Sea to Eastern Anatolia throughout history, was clothed in her white bridal gown with the snowfall.
The Zigana Mountain Pass on the Historical Silk Road, which is located at an elevation of 1,800 metres on the Gümüşhane-Trabzon highway, was painted white by the snowfall that started falling in the region yesterday and continued until this morning.
The area’s pine trees donned their white wedding gowns as a result of the rain, and the Highways personnel worked into the wee hours of the morning to fix transportation-related problems. In the location where the deep valleys meet the fog, residents who arrived after the rain photographed these moments on their smartphones, presenting limitless views.
According to a local businessman named Feride Araz, the area’s snow-covered trees were also prepared for winter.
Stating that Zigana is a very beautiful geography, Araz stated,
“The most beautiful view of winter is here. Snow, rain, sun are experienced together in 4 seasons here. All sides become pendant from the cold. People come, travel, do their shopping and return. It rained again 15 days ago, and it was two. After that, there is now continuous rainfall. Here there is 1-2 meters of snow. We also have a ski resort up the road. The trees also put on their winter clothes. They are ready for winter and we are ready.”
